About this path

A web developer builds in layers: the page (HTML and CSS), the behaviour (JavaScript), the site (a content system such as WordPress) and the data and security behind it. This path follows those layers in order, so each stage uses the last.

If you already use a computer well, start at HTML and web design. Your centre gives the schedule for each course.

The stages, in order

  1. Stage 1: Basic computer and the internet

    Files, folders, the browser and typing are the developer’s everyday tools.

    After this stage you can

    • Organise files and folders and find them again
    • Use the browser and email with confidence
    • Type with all ten fingers

  2. Stage 2: HTML and web design

    The page itself: HTML for structure, CSS for layout and style, and a design that works on a phone.

    After this stage you can

    • Write a valid HTML5 page with headings, lists, links, images, tables and forms
    • Lay out a page with the box model, Flexbox and CSS Grid
    • Make a page responsive, so it works on every screen size

  3. Stage 3: JavaScript and interactive web pages

    Behaviour: the page responds to clicks and typing, checks forms and changes itself.

    After this stage you can

    • Use variables, conditions, loops, functions, arrays and objects
    • Select and change page elements through the DOM and respond to events
    • Check a form before it is sent and find mistakes with the browser console

  4. Stage 4: WordPress website building

    A real site online: pages, menus, themes, forms and the upkeep of backups, updates and users.

    After this stage you can

    • Set up a WordPress site with a theme, menus and a static home page
    • Add images, a contact form and a WhatsApp button, and keep plugins few
    • Back up the site, apply updates and check it before launch

  5. Stage 5: Web development, networking, databases and IT security (class 10 pass)

    What is behind the site: MySQL databases, how networks and DNS work, and keeping accounts and servers safe.

    After this stage you can

    • Create MySQL tables and write SELECT, UPDATE, GROUP BY and JOIN queries
    • Understand IPv4 addresses, DNS and DHCP
    • Protect accounts with strong passwords and two-factor authentication, and recognise phishing and malware
