About this model
This circuit board demonstrates the AND logic gate, whose output is ON only when every input is ON. It is a simple, visual way to learn the first rule of digital logic and to see how decisions are made inside calculators, computers and control systems.
How it works
The science behind it
The idea the model demonstrates, in words you can use in your report and when you explain it.
Digital circuits work with two states: 1 (high voltage, true) and 0 (low voltage, false). An AND gate gives an output of 1 only when all its inputs are 1; if even one input is 0, the output is 0. Its Boolean expression is Y = A · B, read as "A AND B", and for two inputs the truth table has four rows: 00 gives 0, 01 gives 0, 10 gives 0 and 11 gives 1. You can picture it as two switches in series with a bulb: the bulb lights only when both switches are closed. In electronic form, an AND gate can be made with diodes and a resistor or with transistors, and it is packed inside ICs such as the 7408. A good Indian example is a bank locker, which opens only when the customer's key and the bank's key are both used.
Make it yourself
Make an AND gate circuit board yourself
Build your own version from scratch, or use the steps to understand how the ready-made model is put together before you present it.
What you need 8
Step by step 8 steps
First make the switch version of AND: put two simple switches one after the other (in series) with the bulb and the cells. The bulb lights only when both are closed.
For the electronic version, connect the 1 kΩ resistor from positive to an output point, Y.
Connect the two diodes with their striped ends (cathodes) towards inputs A and B and their other ends to Y.
Wire each SPDT switch with its middle pin to an input and its outer pins to positive (1) and negative (0). Add a green LED with its 1 kΩ resistor from each input to negative.
Connect the red output LED from Y to negative, long leg towards Y; the 1 kΩ pull-up limits its current.
Set the inputs to 00, 01, 10 and 11 in turn. The output LED should light only for 11.
Record the truth table and compare it with Y = A · B.
Mount and label everything, with the bulb-and-switch version beside the electronic one so visitors can compare them.

Safety first
Go through these points before you build or switch anything on. Younger students should do this with an adult.
- Use cells only (6 V); never connect the board to an adapter you have opened.
- Do not leave the bulb lit for long, as it gets warm.
- Solder the final board only with an adult beside you.
- Take the cells out when the board is stored.
Troubleshooting
If something does not work
The usual problems with this model and how to fix them. Open a problem to see the fix.
The output LED lights for 01 or 10
A diode is the wrong way round, or the input set to 0 is not really connected to negative. The stripe must face the input, and the switch's 0 side must go to negative.
The output LED stays dark even for 11
Check the LED's polarity and the pull-up resistor, and check with a multimeter that both inputs really reach positive when set to 1.
An input LED does not match its switch position
On some switches the middle pin is not the common one. Find the common pin with continuity mode and rewire.
The bulb version lights with only one switch closed
The switches are side by side (in parallel). Rewire them one after the other.
Exhibition day
How to present it
A running order for the exhibition table or the practical, step by step.
Ask the judge to choose the inputs and predict the output before you switch on.
Show the series-switch analogy with a quick sketch next to the board.
Display the truth table and tick each row as you demonstrate it.
Give one real AND-type example, such as a bank locker that needs two keys.
Practice
Viva questions
Practice questions on this model, with short answers. Try each one aloud before you open the answer.
What is the output of an AND gate when one input is 0?
The output is 0, because an AND gate gives 1 only when all inputs are 1.
Write the Boolean expression for a two-input AND gate.
Y = A · B.
Which simple circuit behaves like an AND gate?
Two switches connected in series with a bulb; the bulb glows only when both switches are closed.
Name an IC that contains AND gates.
The 7408 IC, which contains four two-input AND gates.

Buying checklist
Before you buy
What to check before you order the model, and what to do when it arrives.
1Before you order
- Check whether your class needs logic gates (senior physics or computer science) or simpler switch circuits.
- Read the listing to see the power source and whether batteries are included.
- If you plan to show several gates, choose boards with the same power source so they can be shown together.
- Keep the box to protect the switches and LEDs.
- Check the delivery date for your PIN code on the marketplace, and order well before the exhibition or practical.
- Practise explaining it. Judges ask what the model shows and why; knowing the science matters as much as the model. The viva questions above are a good place to start.
2When it arrives
- Test all four input combinations as soon as it arrives.
Next steps
Take it further
Ways to turn this model into a bigger investigation or a stronger exhibition entry.
Add a third diode and switch for a three-input AND gate, and extend the truth table to eight rows.
Build an AND gate from two transistors in series and compare it with the diode version.
Make a model door alarm that sounds only when the system is switched on AND the door opens.
Audience
Who it suits
Suits Class 11 and 12 students learning logic gates in physics or Boolean logic in computer science, and beginners in digital electronics.
