Planning calculator

Plan your centre's numbers.

Type your own costs, seats and the fee you intend to charge. The planner shows your monthly cost, how many students you need to break even, and a month by month projection.

Everything shown is an estimate worked out only from the numbers you type. It uses no institute fee and no membership fee, and it does not predict or promise what any centre will earn. Try a cautious case as well as a hopeful one.

Rent for the premises, as in your agreement.

All staff together, including a lab assistant. Add your own pay if you will take one.

Your estimate for lights, fans, computers and any air conditioning.

Including a backup connection if you plan one.

Marketing, repairs, stationery, accounting, loan instalments and anything else regular.

Deposit, wiring, furniture, computers and everything else you pay once. Include the membership fee only as quoted to you in writing.

One student per computer in a practical batch.

How many separate groups use the lab in a day.

Per student per month. For a course fee, divide it by the months of the course.

Once the centre is established. Be cautious: seats are rarely all filled.

Students are assumed to build up evenly. Use 1 if you expect them from the start.

Up to 60.

Fill in the form with your own numbers. Nothing is pre-filled, because any figure we showed could be mistaken for a real fee or a real cost. Not sure of a number? Use a cautious guess and change it later.

How the planner works

  • Monthly cost is rent, salaries, electricity, internet and your other monthly costs added together.
  • Places are seats multiplied by batches a day: one student per seat in each batch.
  • Break-even students is the monthly cost divided by your monthly fee, rounded up.
  • The projection builds students up evenly to your chosen share of places over the months you choose, then holds it there. Income is students times your fee. The running total starts at minus your one time set-up cost.
  • Not included: tax, loan interest beyond what you enter, fee discounts, dropouts, seasonal changes and your own pay unless you put it in salaries.

An estimate is only as good as the numbers behind it. Check each figure against a real quote or bill, and speak to an accountant before you commit money. See fees and bookkeeping for how to keep records that make the numbers real.
