Let us begin

The big idea

A sentence is like a small house. It needs a strong base, and then we can add rooms. Let us build a sentence one piece at a time.

Every sentence needs two parts. The first part tells us who or what the sentence is about. This is the subject. The second part tells us what the subject does. This is the verb part.

The shortest sentence can be just two words: Birds fly. Birds is the subject. Fly is the verb.

Now we can add details. Answer the questions where, when and how. Birds fly in the sky. Birds fly in the sky every morning. Birds fly quickly in the sky every morning.

A sentence starts with a capital letter and ends with a full stop, a question mark or an exclamation mark. Always read your sentence aloud to check that it makes sense.

A sentence growingThree stair steps. The first says Birds fly. The second adds in the sky. The third adds every morning. Birds fly. Birds fly in the sky. Birds fly in the sky every morning. Step 1 Step 2 Step 3
Add one detail at a time to grow a sentence.

Worked examples

See how it works

  1. Building up

Step 1: Dogs bark. Step 2: Dogs bark loudly. Step 3: Dogs bark loudly at night. Each step adds one detail and the sentence stays correct.

  2. Finding the parts

In the sentence "The little girl sings a song", the subject is The little girl and the verb part is sings a song.

  3. Fixing a broken sentence

"Plays in the park" has no subject. We add one: The children play in the park. "The children in the park" has no verb, so we add one too.
