Let us begin

The big idea

Every plant is made of different parts. Each part has its own job, like the members of a family. Let us meet them one by one.

The roots grow under the soil. They hold the plant firmly in the ground and take in water from the soil. Carrot and radish are roots that we eat.

The stem holds the plant up. It carries water from the roots to the leaves and other parts.

The leaves are usually green. They make food for the plant using sunlight, air and water. Spinach and coriander are leaves that we eat.

The flower grows into a fruit. Many flowers are bright and have a sweet smell. Cauliflower is a flower that we eat.

The fruit has seeds inside. When a seed gets soil, water and warmth, it can grow into a new plant.

Worked examples

See how it works

  1. Which part is under the soil?

The roots grow under the soil. They hold the plant and drink water.

  2. Which part makes food?

The leaves make food for the plant. That is why a plant needs sunlight on its leaves.

  3. From flower to new plant

First the flower grows. Then the flower becomes a fruit. The fruit has seeds. A seed can grow into a new plant.

Try it at home

  4. After two or three days, look closely. See the small white root and the small shoot.
  5. Draw your sprout and write the words root and shoot next to the right parts.

Ask a grown-up: Please remind the child to wash hands after touching the seeds and the wet cloth.
