Let us begin

The big idea

Food gives us energy to run, play and learn. Different foods help our body in different ways. A healthy plate has a little of everything. Let us see what goes on it.

Grains like rice, roti and oats give us energy. Vegetables and fruits give us vitamins that keep us healthy. Dal, beans, eggs and paneer help us grow strong. Milk and curd help our bones and teeth.

A healthy plate has colours. Green spinach, orange carrots, red tomatoes and yellow dal make the plate bright and full of good things.

We should eat many different foods each day, and drink plenty of water. Sweets, chips and fried snacks are fine only now and then, in small amounts.

Eat slowly and chew well. Sit down to eat, and wash your hands first. Try new foods, because you may like them.

Worked examples

See how it works

  1. A simple meal

Rice and dal, one vegetable, a slice of cucumber and a glass of curd. This plate has grains, protein, vegetables and a milk food.

  2. A snack time

A banana or an apple is a healthy snack. It gives energy and vitamins and does not harm teeth like a toffee.

  3. Colourful plate

Maya counts the colours on her plate: white rice, yellow dal, green beans and orange carrot. That is 4 colours, and a happy, healthy meal.

Try it at home

Draw my plate

You will need

  • Paper
  • A round lid or plate to trace
  • Crayons

What to do

  1. Trace a big circle on the paper for a plate.
  2. Divide the circle into four parts with lines.
  3. Draw grains in one part, vegetables in another, fruit in the third and dal or egg in the fourth.
  4. Add a small glass of milk or curd beside the plate.
  5. Colour it and tell a family member what you chose.

Ask a grown-up: An adult can serve a mixed plate and help you taste a new food.
