Let us begin

The big idea

A timetable tells us what to do and when. It helps us finish the important things and still have time to play. Let us make a picture timetable for your day.

Every day has a morning, an afternoon, an evening and a night. We do different things at different times.

A timetable lists the jobs of the day in order. First we wake up and brush our teeth. Then we eat breakfast and go to school. In the evening we play and do homework. At night we eat dinner and sleep.

Putting things in order helps us not to forget. It also helps us stay calm, because we know what comes next.

A good timetable has time for work and time for play. It also has time for rest. Children need a lot of sleep to grow well.

A day in orderSix boxes in a row from morning to night: wake up, school, play, homework, dinner and sleep, with arrows between them. Wake School Play Work Eat Sleep Morning to night One job after another
A timetable puts the jobs of the day in order.

Worked examples

See how it works

  1. A school day

Wake up, brush teeth, bath, breakfast, school, lunch, come home, rest, play, homework, dinner, sleep. The order is the timetable.

  2. A Sunday

On Sunday there is no school. We can wake up a little later, help at home, play with friends, read a book and visit family.

  3. Before and after

We brush our teeth before breakfast, and we do our homework after we play. Words like before, after, first and then help us say the order.

Try it at home

My picture timetable

You will need

  • A big sheet of paper
  • Crayons
  • A pencil

What to do

  1. Fold the paper in half three times to make 8 boxes.
  2. In each box, draw one thing you do in your day, such as eating, school, play, homework or sleep.
  3. Write a number in each box to show the order.
  4. Colour the pictures and stick the sheet on your wall.
  5. Each evening, tick the boxes you finished.

Ask a grown-up: An adult can help you decide the order of the jobs and fix good times for them.
